San Gimignano, UNESCO world heritage

“Masterpiece of human creative genius, it bears unique testimony of the past civilization and an exceptional example of architectural and landscape structures, testimony of important moments in the history of mankind.” With this motivation San Gimignano was included in the Unesco World Heritage List in 1990.
Visiting San Gimignano means delving completely in the atmosphere of a medieval town: it has remained more or less intact and the city still represents one of the best examples of urban layout in the age of the communes.
It’s characteristic trait – capturing anyone’s attention even from afar – are the 14 spectacular and unmistakable towers which dominate the landscape (there were 72 back then) each one of which has its own story to tell.
Around 1300 a process of architectural renovation went under way which saw, apart from an expansion in the walls, the birth of various palaces, churches and convents, embellished by illustrious works of art all around the squares of Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo; important artists came to work here such as the protagonists of the Sienese and Florentine schools namely Simone Martini, Lippo Memmi, Taddeo di Bartolo, the Ghirlandaio, ecc. giving the city sheen with religious, civil and military architecture.
Until half of the 14th century, San Gimignano lived an era of economic and artistic wealth also thanks to merchants and pilgrims who travelled along the via Francigena which crossed this splendid town and still now divides it into two.
The town, immersed in a magnificent landscape and surrounded by a generous land which offers exquisite products such as saffron and the Vernaccia wine, is witness to one of the most important phases of human history and is a place where to savour the pleasures of life.
